Nigeria’s Anthony Joshua has been taunted by his conqueror Andy Ruiz Jr, with the Mexican saying he will “call the shots” on where their rematch takes place.
WBO, WBA and IBF king Ruiz has told AJ and promoter Eddie Hearn that their second showdown must take place either in Mexico or the US.
Ruiz, who delivered one of the biggest ever shocks in sport by beating Joshua in Madison Square Garden last month, does not believe the fight should be in the UK because, as champ, he has the right to decide.
Asked where he wants to fight Joshua next, Ruiz Jr, 29, said: “I want the rematch to be in Mexico or New York again. Las Vegas or here at the Staples Centre [in LA].” Holding the fight in the Big Apple could provide AJ with nightmares given the limp performance he put in against the then 25-1 no-hoper Ruiz.
Quizzed on what it would mean if Joshua, also 29, didn’t agree to his plans, Ruiz said: “It doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter because I am the champion. I’m calling the shots.”
Hearn revealed an official announcement on the rematch has been delayed because they cannot agree on a venue. Hearn said: “We had a few late approaches [from other sites] that delayed things. Expect to decide this weekend. Still, U.K. and U.S. [are the] favourites.”
