The 2018 Met Gala Is Set To Be The Most Controversial Yet As Next Year’s Theme Is Unveiled

Ah! The Met Gala. Also known as fashion’s biggest night, this year’s exhibition focused on avant garde fashion designer Rei Kawakubo and her label Comme des Garçons: The Art of the In-Between which opened in May with a gala that saw Rihanna and Katy Perry take on extreme dresses.Though its opening next May is nearly a year away, the theme for The Met’s 2018 Costume Institute exhibition has reportedly been revealed. According to WWD, ‘Fashion and religion’ will be the theme of next year’s blockbuster fashion exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. The museum has not officially confirmed the news yet, but the idea for the project reportedly came about well before the current exhibit, “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: The Art of the In-Between” opened. The exhibition, which in turn prompts the theme for the annual, Vogue-associated Met Gala and its spectacular red carpet parade, is set to be one of the museum’s most ambitious – and potentially controversial – to date, and would be slated to launch on Monday 7th May 2018.Fashion and religion however, have forever been intertwined, as designers from Jean Paul Gaultier, to Christopher Kane, to Dolce and Gabbana have referenced silhouettes, iconography and colour palettes from religious dress within their collections. While in celebrity culture, too, stars like Madonna and Lady Gaga have appropriated elements of religion in music videos and stage performances, causing some of the biggest sartorial talking points of their generations.Photo Credit: Getty
