The host nation, Russia, recorded a historic victory over Spain to book their place in the quarterfinals, after defeating La Roja 4-3 in a penalty shootout.
Croatia joined the reigning teams on Sunday after defeating Denmark 3-2 in a penalty shootout. The Samba Boys rose to the dominant side they have always been known to be, as they breezed past Mexico, 2-0 on Monday. Belgium recorded a very slim victory over the Japanese Samurais on Monday courtesy of a 88th minute screamer by Nacer Chadli.
