20 Dos And Dont’s For A Healthy Skin Care Routine

As the skin is the largest organ of the human body, it is the reflection of our beauty routine, healthiness and eating habits. When you glow or not, it is noticed on your skin, when you have healthy and balanced diet consistently, your outer layer tells the result and when you have full, soft and succulent lips or otherwise, it is still the best portrayer. This makes it pertinent and important for us to take care of the skin carefully and intentionally.
Over time, there have emerged different ways of treating this organ, such as exfoliating, moisturising, toning, bleaching and many more and at one point or the other on KOKO beauty segment, we have talked about them, if not as a subject matter on it’s own, then as a point of reference and discuss while tackling one part of the body or the other.20 Dos And Dont's For A Healthy Skin Care Routine
Likewise, there are varieties of items and products that have been produced to ensure the skin is best treated. In and above all of these products, we have ensured we emphasise the saliency of using natural products and mostly, home made solutions. This does not invalidate the potency of unnatural products, it is just that too much use of chemicals on the body surface is not favorable. If make up kits are made of chemicals, make up removals same and then the products used for the daily beauty routine, you of course would agree that the body will lose its naturality and it’s pH level will be tampered with beyond repair. So, natural facials and treatments are just the best bet for the skin.
That being said, there are many more done as mistake while taking care of the this delicate organ generally and so today, we want to look at 20 of these mistakes and best solutions to prevent or correct them for the lovely and radiant skin everyone desires and deserves.
Skin Care Dos
1. Drink plenty of water…
it helps to hydrate and nourish your skin without stress. It also helps you detox as you sweat out toxins and pass more out in urine
2. Moisturise at night… three times a week…
Moisturizer is one of the most important beauty products out there. Whether it be for the face or for the body, keeping your skin moisturized will combat multiple skin concerns down the road. Using an overnight moisturiser is a great way to stay consistently hydrated. Skin cell regeneration works faster overnight so using a nighttime moisturiser before bed is sure to keep your skin looking and feeling healthy. After washing the face or skin, don’t towel off completely. That’s because applying moisturizer to damp skin can help lock in hydration.20 Dos And Dont's For A Healthy Skin Care Routine3. Exfoliate.. once or twice a week… Dead cells may stay on the skin and make the it dry and lifeless. Weekly exfoliation is a must to remove old dead cells and to make room for new cell regeneration. Using an exfoliation scrub gently once or twice a week can help you glow. Ensure you first know your type of skin though and get exfoliator suitable for it.
4. Exfoliate with natural fruit enzymes… Fruit acids from pumpkin, papaya, and pineapple, for example, dissolve dead skin cells gently yet effectively. Happy with your current product but want to get fruity? Pump up your scrub by squirting a little lemon juice into it for instant brightening and buffing action.
5. Eat healthy… you are what you eat and just as our mothers told us growing up “you need to eat your veggies!” – You may also try juicing, natural juices are full of vitamins, anti-oxidants and nutrients that help increase blood flow as well as total cell turnover and regeneration making for the healthiest complexion!
6. Lavish your face and body with coffee topically… Numerous studies point to coffee-derived caffeine’s skin-tightening and redness-soothing properties, making it the perfect antidote to undereye pouches and rosacea. In addition to stocking your shelf with caffeine-laced eye and face serums, you might also consider investing in caffeinated anti-cellulite creams, as they’ve been shown to temporarily lessen the appearance of dimples.
7. Apply body tanner or sunscreen… There’s nothing wrong with sporting a fake glow! sunscreen will help guard against harmful UVA and UVB rays, so get yourself one and use as directed.
8. Get A Massage Often… as you should not touch your face or skin, massaging done by an expert is an easier way out. A facial massage can help relieve stress, improve elasticity, and provide a healthy glow.
9. Use  appropriate topical treatment on a blemish right away… One that contains lactic acid is best for cysts—hard, painful bumps that appear under the skin and can last for weeks—while a salicylic acid or benzyl peroxide formula is ideal for minor to moderate breakouts.
10. Take anti-inflammatory supplements… such as omega-3s, B vitamins, and querecitin, which help prevent acne flare-ups, encourage moisture absorption and retention, and improve blood circulation. If you’re handy with a juicer, you might even try making your own at-home beauty drinks.20 Dos And Dont's For A Healthy Skin Care RoutineDont’s
1. Don’t overdo…
keep your beauty routine as simple as possible to ensure a healthy complexion. Testing out too many serums and constantly changing your skin care routine will irritate your skin. Find one routine that works best for your skin type and stick to that for as long as possible! This will help to keep your skin balanced and happy. You really only need to wash your face once a day – washing twice a day can also be over doing it, depending on your skin type.
2. Don’t follow internet verbatim… Everything you see on the internet may not work for you. In fact, some will work for your friends and not you or vice versa.  You may find some really good DIY ideas but it is important to be aware of which at-home ingredients are helpful and which could be harmful. Proceed with caution when you see vinegar, spices, hydrogen peroxide, egg whites and or citrus in the recipes. Vinegar when used about necessary measurement may burn your skin and all, so be careful.
3. Don’t over-exfoliate… Exfoliating more than two times a week maximum can wash away the necessary oils on your skin and cause it to be drier than normal. Then, avoid using harsh scrubs that will make the skin irritated and vulnerable. If you have oily skin you can handle more exfoliation per week but if you tend to have dry/normal skin stick to once or twice a week max!20 Dos And Dont's For A Healthy Skin Care Routine
4. Don’t touch your face… This may be the hardest task of the millennium, especially if you have blemish (pimple, acne, boil or eczema) on or all over the face but then, it is necessary. The more that you touch your face the more problems that will arise. When you touch your face with unclean hands you are pulling bacteria from your dirty hands to your face and causing more fuel for the blemishes.
5. Don’t take too many showers… it may be summertime or you may be working up a sweat, it’s all fine but taking multiple showers throughout the day can wreak havoc with your skin. Though you might think it’s hydrating, topically, water can have a drying effect on your epidermis. To avoid looking like a prune, douse in small doses and always moisturize immediately after showering.

6. Don’t apply too many face products at once and everytime…
no matter how eager you are to try them out, using too many products can irritate the skin. So sometimes, try keep your make up simple and if you have to make it dramatic, let it not be daily. This also applies to all other face products such a cream.
7. Don’t take too much coffee…  while a cup a day (without whipped cream, sugar substitutes) may be beneficial, too much coffee can be dehydrating.
8. Don’t sunbathe. A little sun can perk up your complexion, but even a slight tan represents injury to your largest organ (your skin). The incidental sun exposure you get while driving in the car or walking to lunch is enough to meet your daily vitamin D quota, so don’t neglect your skin sunscreen-slathering duties. Using a formula that’s SPF 15 or higher is essential, and it should be reapplied every couple of hours.
9. Don’t shower in hot water.. it can be soothing, especially during harmattan but while this might soothe your mind after a long day, it’s not so great for your skin. Super-hot water can strip your skin of essential oils, leaving you feeling dry. So, the next time you shower, turn down the dial and opt for washing off in lukewarm water instead.
10. Don’t use a harsh alcohol-based toner or toothpaste to tame blemishes… Stripping the skin of moisture will send oil glands into overdrive and may worsen your condition. Likewise, a dab of toothpaste on problem spots will do more harm than good: The menthol it contains can cause itching and inflammation, resulting in further acne flare-ups.Photos Credit: Getty
