10 Biggest Nollywood Movies Of 2019

In 2019 we got to witness quite some extraordinary cinematic experience from Nollywood, which serves us a serious upgrade on what we’ve witnessed in the past years from Lionheart to King Of Boys, Chief Daddy, Blings Lagos to Ramseh Noah’s Living In Bondage’s sequel. This list article is to curate the 10 biggest Nollywood movies of 2019.

It’s been box office hit after hit, Funke Akindele-Bello’s box-office thriller the “Excellency” also made the list. While Genevieve’s Lionheart got an Oscar nomination and then got disqualified for having too much English spoke in it.

  1. Lionheart:

This movie probably created the biggest uproar in the Nollywood space this year, after it was disqualified from its Oscar nomination which was celebrated massively when it was first announced to have made the nomination of the Best International Feature of 2019.

The movie’s motion pictures was top-notch, featuring veteran Nollywood actors like Pete Edochie, Nkem Owoh, Onyeka Owenu and rapper Phyno.

2. King Of Boys:

Released back in 2018, the gangster epic movie King of Boys focused on power tussle that tells the story of a businesswoman and philanthropist named Alhaja Eniola Salami (played by Nollywood veteran Sola Sobowale) with her growing political ambitions. King of Boys hit loft cinema heights in 2019 and is the 3rd most-streamed Nigerian movie on Netflix.

Sobowale won the award for the Best Actress in Africa for her role in ‘King Of Boys’ at the 2019 edition of the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) held on Sunday, October 27, 2019.

Adesua Etomi-Wellington also got the Best Actress award in a Supporting Role category while the film competed against ‘The Delivery Boy’, ‘Lara and the Beats,’ ‘Makeroom,’ ‘Gold Statute,’ ‘Up North,’ and ‘Knockout Blessing’ to emerge as the Best Nigerian film.

3. Chief Daddy:

This has got to be the biggest tragic-comedy movie of Nollywood this year, which is centered on a billionaire industrialist Chief Beecroft played Taiwo Obileye, a flamboyant benefactor to a large extended family of relatives, household staff and assorted mistresses.

Chief lives large, like there’s no tomorrow, until the day he dies suddenly and the ‘bullion van’ stops. What’s in his will and who gets all that money? What happens next will surprise you.

Joke Silva played Chief Daddy’s wife with Falz and Solomon Bryan playing his sons. While Funke Akindele and Kate Henshaw are chief Daddy’s older daughters from a previous marriage before he married Lady Kay “Joke Silva”.

The theme and the plot of the movie were kept simple and within Lagos.

4. Gold Statue:

Gold Statue is a comedy adventure drama that follows the adventure of two young men, Wale (Gabriel Afolayan) and Chike (Kunle Remi) in search of a ‘Gold Statue’ believed to have been a deity inherited by their generation.

In trying to locate where the supposed ‘Gold Statue’ is located. The movie is one of the highest streamed Nollywood movies on Amazon. The movie was directed by Tade Ogidan, some of the cast on the movie was Norbert Young, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Sola Sobowale, Alibaba, Francis Onwuchie, Yvonne Jegede, Adeniyi Johnson.

5. Mokalic:

Set in an automobile repair workshop (mechanic village), the movie Mokalik (Mechanic) tells the story of an 11-year-old boy named Ponmile.

Born into a middle-class family, he spends his days as a lowly apprentice at the workshop to gain a different perspective on life.

6. Blings Lagosians:

The movie The Bling Lagosians follows an affluent, flamboyant, over the top family, the Holloways, living in Lagos. Despite not being as wealthy as they used to be, the family struggles to hold on to their past glory even if it means living in debt.

7. Love Is War:

In this movie, Sparks fly when a husband and wife win the nominations as the candidates of the two major parties in an upcoming gubernatorial election. Will their marriage survive this unprecedented event?… The movie was directed by Omoni Oboli and it casts Omoni Oboli, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Jide Kosoko, Shaffy Bello, Toke Makinwa, Akin Lewis.

The movie is still making its rounds in the cinemas.

8. Up North:

Shot in Bauchi and Lagos states, it follows the story of a rebellious heir from a wealthy family is sent to Northern Nigeria for his national service. The movie featured Nollywood power couple but the movie actually didn’t hit the estimated heights its meant to hit in the cinemas but it didn’t do that bad.

9. Living In Bondage; Breaking Free:

This is Ramsey Nouah’s directorial debut movie, a sequel to the 1992 original movie Living In Bondage, the movie was released for the cinemas Nov 8 2019 and in the first 2 weeks in the cinemas, it made over N40m. The movie cast industry veterans like Bob Manuel, Nancy Isime, Kenneth Okonkwo, Munachii Abii, Kalu Ikeagu.

10. Excellency:

The Excellency is another box-office hit that premiered just some days back, the movie was directed by Funke Akindele-Bello, If the movie thrillers and its cinema premiere is anything to go by it is bound to be a major hit another 2019 Funke-Akindele area scatter.
